Meadowlark Hills
A clear vision of the client’s needs.
Thanks to glasses smeared with petroleum jelly.
When Meadowlark Hills CEO, Steve Shields, set out to build a completely different kind of assisted-living facility, he sought out partners that he knew could handle the challenge. Shields, a nationally renowned innovator in the field of assisted-living, chose KBS Constructors to handle the project’s construction based on our reputation and versatility.
As for the project’s prospective architects, accepting the challenge began with a first-hand view of how and why there was a need to do things differently.
For 72 hours, one of the firm’s associates was required to live the life of a resident at a traditional assisted-living facility. Confined to a wheelchair and fitted with glasses smeared with petroleum jelly, the young architect was dependent upon others to bathe, dress, and feed her.
The architect’s new insight, along with the owner’s passion and KBS’s construction expertise, became the combination that would lead to a first-of-its-kind assisted living facility. Free of the institutional trappings found in most “nursing homes,” the Bramlage House and Wroten House represent what Shields hopes will become a trend in the industry—creating what he describes as, “a place to live, not a place to come and die.”
With handrails that resemble molding, entryways built like Cape Cod front porches, and lobbies that feel like living rooms, the finished product has become a source of pride for Shields, the architects, and KBS—and most importantly—for the residents who call it home.
Sharing our clients’ visions and applying our experience to find affordable ways to make them a reality is one of the ways KBS Constructors has become the industry leader in Critical Environment Construction™.
